ZAGREB/PRISHTINA, 13 May 2011 – Minister of Economic Development, Besim Beqaj, and his Croatian counterpart, Minister of Economy, Labor and Entrepreneurship, Duro Popijac, signed today in Zagreb a Memorandum of Understanding on economic cooperation between the two countries.

“We had a good and fruitful discussion on cooperation in the field of energy and the transmission of best practices by our colleagues from Croatia, whom also cover both ministries”, said Beqaj after the signing of the Memorandum.
He emphasized specifically that discussions concentrated on the sectors commanding better cooperation between the two countries, whereas this and other similar memorandums to be signed will serve to further strengthening of bilateral cooperation.

On the other hand, Minister Popijac expressed the interest of the Government of Republic of Croatia in supporting Kosovo through direct investments by Croatian companies.

“It is the interest of Croatia to have our enterprises participate more in Kosovo’s economy. We also spoke regarding the wider presence of Kosovar products in the Croatian market”, said Minister Popijac.

The purpose of this Memorandum is to strengthen the friendly bilateral relations in the field of economy, with specific priority on the sustainable economic growth of both countries, by means of cooperation in the sectors of energy, coal, natural gas, renewable energy sources, energy efficiency and mutual assistance in the implementation of projects and initiatives, in full harmony with the policies and strategies of both countries on public enterprise governances.

In the meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister for Investmenst, Domagoj Milosevic, talks concentrated on opportunities of economic cooperation between the two countries. At this occasion, the Croatian Deputy Prime Minister was informed on our country’s economic development priorities and on the investment opportunities in Kosovo, stressing that our country has a European legal infrastructure as far as foreign investments are concerned.

Otherwise, Minister Beqaj also held a meeting today with representatives of the Albanian community in Croatia, and informed them on the current events in the country and on the priorities of economic development, with high appreciations for the contribution they gave for Kosovo during the war and beyond.

During his visit in Croatia, Minister Beqaj will also be received, on Saturday, by the President of Republic of Croatia, Ivo Josipovic.
